Frequently asked questions
Do I need a vet referral?
You do not need a referral for a maintenance session.
However, the Veterinary Surgeon’s (Exemptions) Order (2015) requires referral by a veterinary surgeon who has first seen the animal for any musculoskeletal treatment where there is underlying pathology, disease or injury.
Please be aware that if your animal is lame, has diagnosed pathologies, injuries etc. then I cannot treat without referral from your vet. If in doubt, speak to your vet first.
How do I pay for my appointment?
Contactless payment is available at your appointment - this is preferred. Alternatively, I can send you an invoice. Payment is due upon receipt of your invoice.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
I ask for 48 hours’ notice for cancelling your appointment.
Obviously, sometimes circumstances beyond our control occur and 48 hours’ notice is not possible, and I understand that! However, continuously cancelling without sufficient notice will result in you being charged for the appointment.
What if I am not based in the New Forest?
If you are out of my catchment area, please do get in touch regardless! It may be that I have other clients in or near your area, and I will also travel further afield for bigger yards with more horses to treat, or by arrangement.
Does my animal need to be clean?
Yes! Having your horse clean and dry means I am much more able to complete a thorough palpation assessment and treatment. Please have your horse in from the field and ready for your scheduled appointment time.
How can I tell who is qualified to treat my horse?
There are many musculoskeletal practitioners (physios, chiropractors etc.) who all have something different to offer to help you and your horse, depending on your goals. It is a good idea to check registers such as the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP) for practitioners with credible qualifications.
Do I need to be present for my appointment?
Particularly for initial consultations and the first few visits, it is very helpful if you are present for the appointment. Of course, I will share all findings via a written report or can text you or even voice note if you prefer. If you can’t attend, it is still imperative that your horse is in the yard ready for the appointment.
