Static and dynamic assessment
Thorough evaluation of your horse's posture, gait and any movement compensations.
Full body palpation
The best way to assess tone, texture and temperature of the muscles is by feel. Palpation allows for identification of areas of tension, heat, discomfort and weakness.
Massage
The application of mechanical pressure to increase blood flow, influence tone and reduce pain and tension within your horse’s muscles. Massage techniques can be broadly acting or more targeted, such as compression and trigger point therapy, aiming to up-regulate cell function and stimulate healing.
Myofascial release
When over-worked, fascia (the extensive network of connective tissue surrounding all structures in the body) can become tense, dehydrated and restricted. Trauma, injury and repetitive stress can lead to a reduction in flexibility, and can negatively impact the soft tissue structures it surrounds. Myofascial release is a gentle technique similar to some massage techniques. It involves a light, constant pressure aiming to gradually encourage the fascia to ‘un-stick’ and lengthen, allowing release of tension.
Targeted stretches and mobilisations
Therapeutic, targeted stretches encourage flexibility, postural strength and balance, and relaxation; all vital for reducing the risk of injury. Joint mobilisations involve repetitive movement within the joint's passive range of motion. These techniques can help to stretch connective tissue, increase synovial fluid production and also serve as a useful assessment tool.
Electrotherapies
Electrotherapies such as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) can be used to reduce pain via the Pain Gate Theory and increase strength and endurance respectively. These are well tolerated, non-invasive, highly effective methods. Photomodulation (laser) coming soon.
Remedial exercise prescription
Pole work, dynamic stretching exercises, long reining, lunging and other specific in hand or ridden exercises can be prescribed to further cement the benefits of your physio consultations. The homework is just as important as what we achieve together in our session, particularly in rehabilitation cases.
Session and findings report
After any session a full, detailed written report will be emailed to you along with exercise prescriptions and work recommendations. This will also include what we have covered in the session, the findings from assessments, and the treatments provided.
